Abstract

This study aims to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of applying digital materials developed on the ThingLink platform, integrating Virtual Reality (VR) with 360-degree campus panoramic environments, to support campus safety learning for elementary school students with special needs. The study involved capturing real-world images of high-risk areas on campus and routes to the health center, combined with interactive tags, multimedia prompts, and AI voice assistance to construct a contextualized and multi-sensory learning environment. A design-based research approach was adopted, and direct instruction was implemented for iterative teaching and refinement. The participant was a sixth-grade student with autism, and the student’s interaction process and learning responses were analyzed.
The results indicate that VR-based instructional materials can effectively enhance the student’s learning motivation and engagement, and help improve the understanding of campus safety concepts and route recognition skills. However, the student still required the teacher’s guidance when interpreting abstract situations and avoiding rote memorization.
The study suggests that future instructional design should strengthen the diversity of learning contexts and guidance strategies, as well as address equipment and network limitations to improve instructional stability and learning outcomes. This research can serve as a practical reference for integrating technology into special education instruction.
