Abstract

This preliminary study investigates the application and effectiveness of digital learning materials integrated with various instructional strategies in elementary music education. The participants included 56 third-grade students from a public elementary school in northern Taiwan. Four music lessons were designed, covering both knowledge-based and skill-based content. Digital learning materials—including e-books, interactive content, and gamified modules—were implemented based on lesson objectives, paired with teacher-led instruction or student self-directed learning strategies. Data were collected through assessments, questionnaires, and interviews, and analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Results revealed that: (1) teachers can effectively align digital resources with instructional goals, enhancing teaching flexibility; (2) digital materials increase student interest and participation, while self-directed learning supports personalized learning paths; and (3) students performed better in knowledge-based lessons than in skill-based ones, particularly when lacking teacher guidance in self-study contexts. This study highlights the importance of tailoring digital content and instructional strategies to the nature of the learning objective to optimize student outcomes.
