Abstract

This study integrates digital storytelling into an online platform for reflective thinking and investigates its pedagogical effects on graduate students’ reflective thinking. Research participants are 28 graduate students at a university of science and technology in Taipei. This study adopts a one-group pretest-posttest research design in which the participants receive an eighteen-week course. Reflection Tendency Scale is used as the evaluation tool. Interviews with the participants are conducted to understand not only their performance in reflective thinking but opinions on digital storytelling-based teaching and the platform. This study did not find significant pretest-posttest differences in the students’ performance in reflective thinking. However, significant pretest-posttest difference is identified in the “in-depth thinking” subscale. This shows that the course is effective in promoting in-depth reflective thinking among the students. In addition, qualitative data from the interviews indicate that most student participants agree with the effectiveness of the course. Amongst all, feedback mechanism appears to be a key factor that contributes to their positive view of the platform. They appreciate the platform mainly due to its access to peer feedback, the diverse and inspiring viewpoints from which proved helpful to their revision of group work.
