Abstract

Information literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning, and enhancing the ability of people in remote areas to apply information and communications technology (ICT) is an important educational issue. This study aims to understand the current status of local residents’ information literacy and explore the improvement of information literacy after ICT education interventions. In this study, we used cluster sampling to conduct a personal paper questionnaire survey. Before ICT education, 856 residents were selected from each community as “general groups.” After a month of ICT education, the 672 residents re-sampled in each community were “educational groups.” The survey and analysis of the “general groups” showed that people in remote areas have insufficient ICT ability, high ICT learning intention, ICT access less, poor ICT application ability, and seriously lack of routine application ability. This study conducted a t-test and found that the five indicators of information literacy including ICT abilities, ICT intent, ICT access, ICT application, and life application of the “educational groups” all better than “general groups” significantly. The results of this study can provide important information for adult education and government departments.
